Died January 23, 1908. | One of the first American-born pianists and com- | posers to receive general recognition in Europe; | so far, the greatest of our Americans. Born on Clinton | Street in New York City. Of great artistic talent, he | might have become a great poet or painter. His first | studies were at home. In boyhood he was taken by | his mother to Paris, where he studied with the cele- | brated Marmontel, through whose advice he sought | and won a scholarship in the Conservatoire, there | becoming a fellow student with Debussy, who admired | him much. In 1878 he became a pupil in the Frankfort | Conservatory; studied composition with Raff, piano | with Heymann, von Bülow having declined to accept | him. He began teaching at an early age (19), finally | marrying one of his pupils, Miss Marion Nevins (in | 1884); a most felicitous marriage. |; He won the distinction of having his earlier compo- | sitions published in Europe by the old German firm | of Breitkopf & Härtel. During his career he profited | by the warm interest of Mme. Carreño (famous South | Amerian pianist) who played regularly his Sonatas | and Concertos. The First Concerto he played before | Liszt, with d'Albert at the second piano, with the | acclaim of both artists.
