Spätromanisch-frühgotische Gründung im 12 Jh. Von Anfang an starke Befestigung des Kirchhofes mit bossierten Ecktürmen und hoher, wehrgangtragender Kirchhofmauer. Im späten 15 Jh. Erweiterung der Wehranlagen mit einem äußeren Zwinger, der mit Ecktürmen und überwiegend Büchsenscharten ausgestattet ist. Auch die inneren Ecktürme werden nachgerüstet. Umfangreiche Gaden-Anlage mit unterkellertem, doppeltem Gadenring. Im späten 16 Jh Neubau der Kirche unter Sächsisch-thüringischer Herrschaft. Dank ausgedehnter Renovierungen sind umfangreiche Teile der Befestigungen erhalten. Founded in late Romanesque- or early Gothic stile in the 13th century. It was a stronghold from the first beginning onward, with a high cemetery curtain and flanking towers at the corners, reinforced with bulky-headed stones. When the fire-arms get into service, the fortifications were enlarged in the late 15th century by a forcer with additional flanking towers and mostly equipped with loopholes made for handguns. Although the mighty corner towers were equipped with additional handgun-loopholes. After the possession had moved to the noble house of Saxonian-Thuringia, the church was rebuild in the early 17th century. Inside the courtyard is a wide, double ringed variety of half-timbered storage buildings named “Gaden”, mostly with additional cellars. Thanks to intense renovations, wide parts of the fortifications can be visited today.
