Search of the month: Johann Sebastian Bach

In this section, we aim to shed some light on the objects that can be found in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) by looking at sample search terms that will be changing regularly. For the portal launch we have decided to look at the search ‘Johann Sebastian Bach’.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), German composer and Baroque Period virtuoso on organ and piano, was one of the most important and most famous offspring of a Thuringian family of musicians. He was a cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. His works include numerous pieces (The St. Matthew Passion), church cantatas, pieces for the piano and chamber music. His ‘Brandenburg Concerti’ are very famous.

If you enter ‘Johann Sebastian Bach’ in the DDB, you will currently get 616 results. You can narrow these down and search in more detail by using the search filters provided. For example, by focussing your search on portraits, protected monuments and sculptures, music manuscripts or audio recordings. You can also ask for only the results from certain data providers to be displayed. The objects shown here, for example, belong to the collections of the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), the Bavarian State Library as well as the Frisörmuseum in Eckernförde.

Of particular interest are Bach’s manuscripts, for example, the score for his Christmas Oratorio.

The DDB inventory also includes audio files. In this case, for example, a recording of the Christmas carol ‘Gentle Little Jesus’, arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach and interpreted by Leipzig’s St. Thomas Choir (Thomaner Chor), a digitalized version of a gramophone record from the collection of the SLUB Dresden.
