The German Federal Cultural Foundation supports cultural hackathon!

25.06.2018

There is great joy about the official decision announced on 21 June 2018: within the scope of the programme Kultur digital (working title) of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (KSB), the cultural hackathon Coding da Vinci will be supported with 1.2 million euros during the years 2019 to 2022!

Coding da Vinci was established in Berlin in 2014 as a joint project of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library), the Forschungs- und Kompetenzzentrum Digitalisierung Berlin (Research and Competence Centre Digitalization Berlin) (digiS), the Wikimedia Deutschland (Wikimedia Germany) and the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. It had the goal to bring cultural institutions together with developers, designers, gamers and (digital) culture lovers in order to create innovative applications such as apps, websites or games out of the digital collections and open datasets of cultural institutions.

Stephan Bartholmei, who is responsible for product development and innovation at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and who has significantly promoted the further development of the hackathon on the part of the DDB, is pleased:

"At Coding da Vinci, we, the participants, the cultural institutions providing data and event and founding teams learn with and from each other during each hackathon edition. With the expertise, support and partnership provided by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, we are able to jointly develop the successful format of Coding da Vinci in such a way that the impulses set in the hackathons can be further stabilized and multiplied through network effects. I look forward to four exciting years and would like to invite all those who feel the same way to the next edition of Coding da Vinci in Mainz on 27/28 October (Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main)."

Over the past years, the interest for this initiative has constantly increased. The hackathon was implemented as a nationwide event in Berlin by the founding partners twice. With Coding da Vinci Nord (2016) and Coding da Vinci Ost (2018), the cultural hackathon then found its way to different regions in Germany. At present, the events Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main (2018) and Coding da Vinci Süd (2019) are already waiting in the wings.

Thanks to the support, the cultural hackathon is expected to take place up to eight times as a programme-accompanying event at various locations throughout Germany in the coming years. In addition, a business office of Coding da Vinci is being established at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek/Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library) in Frankfurt/Main. The cooperation with the Kulturstiftung des Bundes is, in particular, also intended to allow a more sustainable development of the project prototypes arising in the hackathon and thus to extend the offers in cultural institutions on the basis of open and freely available cultural data.
