Victimised by the excavator
In order to meet the energy demand in Germany, numerous people have had to leave their villages since the end of the 19th century and to this day. For under their houses, under their churches and their kindergartens, under their marketplaces and their fields lay lignite. The photos of the gallery document the loss of homeland. They show how excavators mill their way into the formerly inhabited earth. Coal mining turned busy areas into lunar landscapes. The illustrations also document social protest. While some people had to find a new home and nature paid a high price, others benefited from the supposedly cheap energy.
