Bye bye Hollywood: Forests in crisis
The images were in the news for days: The severe forest fires in January 2025, in which parts of Los Angeles burned and the flames blazed behind the famous Hollywood sign. Forest fires are favoured by a number of factors - long periods of drought, forests and soils that have been dried out for years - but in most cases they are caused by humans, whether through carelessness or arson. The climate crisis is exacerbating the risk of fires, but there are also solutions: Mixed forests are more fire-resistant, can store water better and are considered more natural than pure pine or spruce forests (which are, however, very popular with forest owners). Photographs of forest fires and burnt forests are also part of the cultural heritage that can be found in the German Digital Library. Water march!
