Right-wing violence is not a new phenomenon. It runs through the history of Germany, both in the Federal Republic and, less well known, in the German Democratic Repblic. Events such as the murders by the National Socialist Underground (NSU), the Oktoberfest attack in 1980 or the racist riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in August 1992 represent hundreds, if not thousands, of incidents that have claimed lives since the end of the Second World War - and yet have often been forgotten.

In order to raise awareness of these often suppressed aspects of German history, the online collection ‘Right-wing violence’ is now being created. It will be located in Archivportal-D, a subportal of the German Digital Library. This will create a central digital location to gather, preserve and make accessible access to archive material and knowledge about right-wing extremist and right-wing terrorist violence.

The aim of the project is to present right-wing violence from multiple perspectives - from right-wing extremist groups and their actions to those affected. The Federal Archives are in charge of the project and, together with the Baden-Württemberg State Archives, are developing the concept for the content of the thematic portal. FIZ Karlsruhe is responsible for the technical realisation of the thematic portal.

The development is financed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. This project will make an important contribution to the social reappraisal of right-wing violence.
