Die Petrarca-Ausgabe des venezianischen Druckers und Gelehrten Aldo Manuzio ist ein besonders prägnantes Beispiel für die Innovationskraft dieser Offizin. Im Jahr 1501 begann Aldo mit der Produktion seiner „libelli portatiles“, Textausgaben ohne gelehrten Kommentar im Oktav-Format - ein Format, das bislang nur für Andachtsbücher üblich war. Im Juli erschien der Petrarca als erstes „tragbares Büchlein“ in italienischer Sprache und mit der von Aldo eingeführten, der Humanistenschrift nachempfundenen Kursive. Die Textherstellung übernahm der Humanist Pietro Bembo nach einer Handschrift des Autors.
The Venetian printer and scholar Aldo Manuzio published this edition of Petrarca and thus produced an outstanding example of his innovative abilities. In 1501, Aldo started to print so-called "libri portatiles", editions of texts without scholarly commentaries in octavo - a format that was used until then for prayer books only. The Petrarca was published in July as the first "portable book" in Italian and printed in the italic types introduced by Aldo based on imitating the handwriting of his time. The text itself was edited by the scholar Pietro Bembo using a manuscript of Petrarca.
