In einen Kalksteinblock meißelt der Steinmetz aus Tarim ein Sprengloch und füllt es mit Schwarzpulver, das er feststampft. Dabei dreht er ein im Sprengloch steckendes Spitzeisen, um ein Loch für die Zündschnur auszusparen. Das Sprengloch wird mit feuchtem Lehm verschlossen. Dann wird die Zündschnur eingelegt und in Brand gesteckt.
A hollow is chiselled into a block of limestone. The stonemason fills gunpowder, which has been previously mixed with water, into the hollow, and rams it down with a round iron bar. With regular movements he turns a pointed iron in the hollow in order to make a hole for the quick match. The hollow is sealed with clay, the quick match inserted and lit.
