The coccoid crescent-shaped dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula belongs to the oceanic plankton of tropical and subtropical seas. the alga reproduces asexually by forming endogenously one or two dinospores (=zoospores). These are Gymnodinium-like, bearing only a single flagellum. Shedding their cell envelopes newly released dinospores are instantly able to develop into crescent-shaped cells again.
