Knowledge spillovers and regional growth in Europe

This paper examines the effects on regional growth of knowledge spillovers among NUTS2 regions in France, Italy, and Spain. Adapting a growth model from Romer (1990), knowledge accumulation is taken as the key to growth (Caniels 2000). In a spatial context, however, knowledge spillovers among regions must be considered along with knowledge accumulation in analyzing the growth process. Knowledge spillovers attenuate with distance and we expect that national borders exacerbate the attenuation. Various measures of R&D are used as proxies for knowledge accumulation. The paper tests several hypotheses regarding regional growth and provides insights into growth dynamics.
