Waschbrett

The washboard from around 1900 is a tool for washing clothes. Before the washing machine was invented, washboards were common in practically all households and almost exclusively used by women. They rubbed the laundry against the wash board in order to loosen the dirt. The typical sound of the washboard is made by the laundry being scrubbed against the corrugated metal with force. The washboard shown here is a keepsake in private possession.
