A complete feeding process of Trichodorus similis on seedling roots of rapeseed consists of five phases: probing, puncturing of the cell wall, salivation, ingestion and retraction. The film shows the characteristics of each of these phases. After probing the cell wall is punctured with rapid stylet thrusts. Then saliva and cytoplasm accumulate around the puncture hole. During ingestion the mixture is broken with deep stylet thrusts and sucked up within a few seconds. In the stomatal lumen a feeding tube is formed, which, after withdrawal of the spear, remains firmly fixed around the puncture hole. In further exposures the co-operation of the pharyngeal spear protractor muscles and the oesophageal lumen muscles is shown.
