Cécile Chaminade | Born August 8, 1861. |
One of the most talented of all women composers, | Chaminade was born in Paris and has lived in or | near there for most of her life. Moritz Moszkowski, the | famous pianist and composer, was her brother-in-law. | She had a good masters: Lecouppey, Savard, Marsick, | and Godard; but, in her own compositions, she was | most deeply influenced by the latter. |
As a pianist-composer, Chaminade made many | concert tours, especially in England; her one American | tour proved successful and gratifying. |
From the standpoint of a composer, she made the | greatest success with her songs and shorter piano | pieces. The songs are highly artistic, well adapted for | the voice, and truly melodious. Many of the piano | pieces have had a great vogue. Of Chaminade's larger | works the ballet, Callirhoë, stands out prominently, | many separate numbers from this work having been | arranged as piano pieces. |
Her Concert Piece, for piano and orchestra, as played | by the composer and others, has proven a brilliant | success. All of her works display strong melodic gifts | and a finish in workmanship which is truly remarkable. | Successful women composers are still scarce in Europe.
