Born October 22, 1811. | Died July 31, 1886. | Franz Liszt. |
"The King of piano virtuosi." Born at | Raiding, Hungary; his father was steward to | Prince Esterhazy and devoted to music. He composed | little tunes before he could spell. At nine he gave his | first concert with such success that a number of people | raised money to pay for his instruction for six years. | Czerny, who was his teacher, made him work very | hard. In 1822 he was brought out in a concert. He | then played in concerts all over Europe, and in 1827 | settled in Paris. |
He wanted to become a priest, but Paganini's | playing inspired him to begin practicing again, and he | became the greatest pianist of his time. After 1847 | he gave the proceeds of his concerts to charity. In | 1848 he accepted the post of opera conductor at | Weimar. He taught hundreds of pupils there. He | died at Bayreuth. |
He was the great champion of Richard Wagner | and the friend of struggling musicians. He invented | many new effects in piano playing. His compositions | include Symphonic Poems, Hungarian Rhapsodies, | many piano pieces and songs.
