Kenga (Zentralsudan, Süd-Wadai) - Magische Krankenbehandlung
Among the Kenga men and women who have magical power and who are able to see and to seize spirits are called kórdo. The kórdo have also knowledge of magical practices to extract the spirits of sickness from the body where they have penetrated. The film shows the kórdo Mandolo of the Barama tribe (Kenga) treating two patients. Mandolo is an old, almost blind woman. For payment the first patient, an old man, has brought a gourdful of millet. He has uncovered his renal region where he feels pain. With a bunch of leaves the kórdo makes some magical gestures, then she extracts, by means of the leaves, the sickness, respectively the matter of sickness, from the old man's body. She hands the leaves to one of the bystanders who takes out the matter of sickness in the form of little stones and pieces of charcoal. The kórdo now tears off some leaves, grinds them in her hand, spits on them, and then extracts the sickness from the old man's knee. In the same way she then treats the other knee and one of the toes of the man. In the next case the kórdo uses a different method of treatment. The female patient kneels down over a little hole, the kórdo takes two leaves of the calothropis-tree out of a gourd of water, spits on them, and then extracts by the leaves the sickness from the woman's body. At the same time the female assistant of the kórdo sprinkles water on the aching part of the body. Finally the leaves are buried in the hole.
