História dos movimentos dos surdos e o reconhecimento da Libras no Brasil

The present work aims to discuss, from a historical perspective, the movements of the deaf and of the LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language) interpreters in Brazil, with a special focus on the developments in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Many of the five million Brazilian deaf people are still invisible to our society, as they search for association mechanisms in order to diminish the weight imposed on them by the coexistence in a world where every service and cultural expression depends on speaking and hearing skills. As a researcher and deaf activist, I point out the need for deaf people to resist each and every term invented by the hearing, who are generally unaware of the deaf social movements for the preservation and free expression of deaf culture, and for the construction of a deaf identity.
