Nicolas Rimsky-Korsakow | Born March 18, 1844. Died June 21, 1908. | All things considered, the greatest of the "Five" | (Russians). In sharp contrast to his friend | Moussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakow was born under most | auspicious circumstances, in Tichvin (Novgorod). But, | like Moussorgsky, his family destined him for a naval | career (frowning upon his musical aspirations), and he | was graduated from a Government school, finally | becoming an admiral. Nevertheless, he had piano | lessons at the age of six, and was much intrigued by a | band of four Jewish musicians, who played at all local | gatherings. In 1856, in St. Petersburg, he had further | lessons on the piano and cello. Later, he had lessons | in composition with Balakireff. Besides, he made the | acquaintance of the best musicians of the day. |
In 1863, during a naval cruise, he wrote the first | Russian Symphony. The cruise over, he renewed his | former friendships, and the Symphony was performed. | Like others of the "Five", he was interested in the | folklore of the country, folk music, legends, and the | like. This material manifests itself in his compositions, | both operatic and instrumental, in Sadko, for instance. | His wife, Mlle. Pourgold, was a great singer and | actress, often the technical adviser of the "Five." In | 1881 he declined the directorship of the Moscow | Conservatory, as successor to N. Rubinstein. Of his | larger works, unquestionably the most popular are the | Scheherezade symphony and the gorgeous Caprice Espagnole. |
