He succeeds Dr Julia Spohr, who is leaving the German Digital Library after around six successful years to take over as head of the German Resistance Memorial Foundation at the turn of the year.

The doctor of history has been working in science and culture management for over ten years, with positions at the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS), the Berlin University Alliance and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, where he was project manager for the relaunch of the German Digital Library portal. Most recently, he headed the research management department at the Central Facility for Continuing Education and Cooperation at the Technical University of Berlin.

In his new role, Martin Breuer will manage the office of the German Digital Library, which is based at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. The office is responsible for the operational business of the German Digital Library and supports the bodies of its competence network.

Dr Martin Breuer: ‘For over ten years, the German Digital Library has been one of the largest collaborative projects for digitising our cultural heritage. With its strong network, it has built up a unique, constantly growing database. Together with the team, I would like to further develop the German Digital Library in a targeted manner and create new collaborations – for broad, innovative use in culture, education and research.’

Gero Dimter, Vice-President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and Deputy Director of the German Digital Library: "We would like to thank Dr Julia Spohr for her work and wish her every success in her future endeavours. She has made the German Digital Library user-oriented and thus taken important steps for its future development. At the same time, we are confident that Dr Martin Breuer will successfully develop the German Digital Library further with his expertise and position it as an important player in digital cultural heritage."

Prof. Dr. Gerald Maier, President of the State Archives of Baden-Württemberg and member of the Executive Board of the German Digital Library: "With her high level of expertise and confident manner, Dr. Julia Spohr has significantly advanced the development of the German Digital Library into a central reference system for cultural assets in Germany. I am delighted that we have found a successor in Dr Martin Breuer, who will continue to develop this unique data repository for cultural assets together with a broad network of various stakeholders."

Frank Scholze, Director General of the German National Library and member of the Executive Board of the German Digital Library: ‘Dr Julia Spohr has done an excellent job working with the German National Library within the framework of the German Digital Library. We look forward to advancing the further development of the German Digital Library with Dr Martin Breuer in his new role.’
