In June of this year, we received the glad news that the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Federal Cultural Foundation) would support our Culture Hackathon Coding da Vinci with 1.2 million Euro for 4 years starting in 2019. This official recognition went to all those who had not only founded this project in 2014, but have also passionately pushed it forward since then: digiS – Forschungs- und Kompetenzzentrum Digitalisierung Berlin (digiS – Research and Competence Center Digitisation Berlin), Wikimedia Deutschland (Wikimedia Germany), Open Knowledge Foundation and the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library)).

From the first Hackathons in Berlin to the regional manifestations of the following years in Hamburg (as Coding da Vinci Nord) and this year in Leipzig (as Coding da Vinci Ost) to the upcoming Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main in Mainz: The cooperation of cultural institutions and cultural hackers has shown impressive and sustainable results since the beginning. The many projects are presented on the website of Coding da Vinci: https://codingdavinci.de/projects/2018/aepfel.html

And what is a Hackathon?

Here we let speak the nice video from the organisers of Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main for itself:

This time, the upcoming Culture Hackathon in Mainz will focus on the Rhein-Main-Region (Rhine-Main area) with the college and university cities of Aschaffenburg, Darmstadt, Frankfurt/Main, Gießen, Mainz, Offenbach, Wiesbaden and Worms. On Saturday, 27th October and Sunday, 28th October 2018 the official Kick-Off of Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main is due to take place.

In addition to the presentations of datasets, cultural institutions and projects, the second day of the kick-off weekend there will also take place two input sessions giving the participants insights into “Metadaten” ("Metadata") (Julia Beck, UB Mainz) and “Datenschnittstellen im Kulturbereich – API der DDB” ("Data interfaces in culture – API of the DBB") (Stephan Bartholmei, DDB).

Afterwards, the participants will have five weeks to develop their ideas and present them on 1st December.

Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main 2018  will be jointly organised by the mainzed - Mainzer Zentrum für Digitalität in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften (Mainz Centre for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies), the Universitätsbibliothek Mainz (University Library Mainz), the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz (Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz), the Fachinformationsdienst Darstellende Kunst (Specialised Information Service Performing Arts), the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library), the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt (University and State Library Darmstadt), the Stadt- und Stiftsarchiv der Stadt Aschaffenburg (Municipal and Monastery Archive Aschaffenburg), the Historisches Museum Frankfurt (Historical Museum Frankfurt), the Wikipedia Frankfurt  as well as the NODE Forum for Digital Arts.
