An examination is carried out in a series of experiments to establish what are the safest conditions for operations on the middle ear. It is found that the effect of the drill or grinding instrument is greatest with a centric run of the drill or grindhead and with adequate moistening of the surrounding area of operation. Drilling or grinding of the ossicle chain should be avoided because of possible damage to the inner ear. The drilling or grinding dust always fills the entire operation area very quickly, necessitating suitable precautions.
