Les Roses

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) also known as "The Raphael of flowers" was famous for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers. This masterpiece of botanical illustration was published by Didot in 30 instalments between 1817 and 1824, and subsequently bound into the limited editions that would form the three volumes of Les Roses. The 170 original illustrations, painted in watercolour on vellum, were translated into engraved plates by the artist and his assistants, using the unusual technique of stipple engraving – tiny dots instead of lines.
