The German Newspaper Portal contains digitised historical newspapers from German cultural heritage institutions, which our data partners - mostly libraries - make available to the German Digital Library.

Our partners decide whether and which newspapers or issues are made available and also whether and which holdings are available as full text, so that the holdings available in the German Newspaper Portal are not a representative selection of German newspaper history.

Our partners are continually making new newspaper collections available so that the number of newspapers in the German Newspaper Portal is constantly growing. A current alphabetical list of the titles contained in the German Newspaper Portal can be found here.

Besides the full-text search, the newspaper portal offers three so-called browsing entry points on the homepage: with these you can access newspapers via title (1), place (2), or publication date (3).

Besides the full-text search, the central search field on the homepage enables you to search for a newspaper title and publication date. Search requests like "Berliner Tageblatt 04.01.1910" will lead to the corresponding newspaper edition. For this, the date must be entered in dd-mm-yyyy format. Newspaper editions which do not have full texts can thus also be found via the search field on the homepage by entering the title and publication date.

A specific search can also be performed in an individual newspaper edition. To do this, the required edition must first of all be selected. After clicking on the magnifying glass symbol in the left-hand column (1), the search field for the full-text search will be shown (2).

The time period filter (1) offers the first possibility of filtering search results in the Deutsches Zeitungsportal. Selecting the time period is possible by adjusting the timeline as well as by entering a start and end date manually. In addition to this, the results list of the full-text search can be further limited by selecting a newspaper (2), the place of distribution (3), the data provider (4) or the language (5).

All newspaper editions which have full texts can be searched through via the full-text search and shown in a results list (1). In doing so, the number of hits per edition (2) and the respective “reference” of your search will be presented in a pop-up window after clicking on “hits in this edition”. The number of hits can be further limited via the filters (3).

Searching in the Deutsche Zeitungsportal (German newspaper portal) is primarily performed in the full texts of the newspaper editions. Information on historical events, topics and persons can be found and shown in the individual newspaper editions via the search function. In this way, it is possible to research according to individual terms or names like “democracy” or “Bismarck” in the newspaper texts.
