Fascination North Pole
The North Pole and the surrounding polar region have fascinated people for a long time. Since the late 19th century, geographers and scientists are constantly trying to get close to the northernmost point on earth. Most expeditions of the late 19th century and the early 20th explored the polar regions, sure, but didn't reach the North Pole. These include, for example, the expeditions of 1869/1870, which were initiated by the cartographer August Petermann (1822-1878). The Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) also participated in numerous polar expeditions until his death. In 1931, the polar region was finally explored by airship "Graf Zeppelin". To this day, it is a matter of contention who first reached the North Pole and when. The North Pole is also a popular motif of cartoons and, at the latest since knowledge of climate change, a political issue.
