Die Stiftung GIZ ist das historische Gedächtnis der deutschen Genossenschaften. Das GIZ wurde im Dezember 2004 als gemeinnützige Stiftung in Treuhandschaft des Bundesverbandes der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken (BVR) in Berlin gegründet. Stifter sind neben dem BVR die DZ BANK AG und die Akademie Deutscher Genossenschaften (ADG).
Im Archiv finden sich 1.500 Meter Bestände des BVR, des Deutschen Raiffeisenverbandes sowie der DZ BANK und ihrer Rechtsvorgänger. Rund 82.000 Fotografien, eine genossenschaftshistorische Präsenzbibliothek, Werbeschriften, Plakate, Spardosen, Architekturmodelle sowie banktechnische Instrumente und Maschinen runden das Sammlungsprofil ab. Ein weiterer Magazinstandort (WGZ-Altarchiv) befindet sich am Standort der DZ BANK in Düsseldorf.
