Das Portal bietet der interessierten Öffentlichkeit einen direkten Zugang in multimedialer Form zu ausgewählten digital erfassten Kulturgütern des Landes. Somit wird eine virtuelle Zusammenführung verschiedenartigster Bestände unterschiedlicher Bibliotheken, Archive, Museen und anderer Kultureinrichtungen geschaffen.
Mit dem Online-Portal „Kulturerbe Niedersachsen“ wird ein zentraler Zugang zu digitalem und digitalisiertem Wissen und Kultur für Niedersachsen geschaffen. Ziel ist es, auch im Medium Internet die kulturtouristische Infrastruktur des Landes Niedersachsen zu stärken und die Geschichte Niedersachsens über diesen Weg noch mehr ins Blickfeld des Bürgers sowie des Wissenschaftlers zu rücken.
