Das Kreisarchiv des Hochsauerlandkreises besteht seit 1980. Es steht allen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern offen. Es übernimmt, verwahrt, ergänzt, erhält und erschließt Unterlagen zur Geschichte des Hochsauerlandkreises und seiner Rechtsvorgänger, den Altkreisen Brilon, Meschede und Arnsberg. Dabei bildet es das kulturelles Langzeitgedächtnis der Verwaltung und der Bewohner und Bewohnerinnen des Hochsauerlandkreises
In der Archivbibliothek werden Publikationen aus und zum Kerngebiet des kurkölnischen Sauerlandes (früheres Herzogtum Westfalen) gesammelt.
