Das lithografische Hauptwerk Georg Kolbes bildet der 1901 entstandene Zyklus von Illustrationen zu Goethes "Faust". Kolbe illustriert den "Prolog im Himmel" und die erste Szene, "Nacht", indem er das Geschehen auf drei Ebenen wiedergibt: Die vierzehn Textseiten werden architektonisch umrahmt und mit einer Darstellung der jeweiligen Szene illustriert während die Randfiguren das Geschehen durch ihre Haltung und Mimik verdeutlichen. In Abständen eingefügt sind acht ganzseitige Farblithografien, die zu Beginn den Engelchor und weiter Fausts inneres Erleben darstellen. Kolbe widmete das gebundene Mappenwerk Maria Gräfin Zichy, der Frau des österreichischen Botschafters in München, die den jungen Künstler durch monatliche Zahlungen und Ankäufe unterstützte.
