Closing the loop? : exploring enablers for the transition to a circular economy

Zusammenfassung: The Circular Economy (CE) aims to reduce the negative climate and environmental impacts of resource extraction and consumption by eliminating waste and pollution through circulating products and materials at their highest value. However, companies and supply chains are locked into their linear patterns of take-make-waste, making CE implementation difficult. This thesis explores how information sharing, supply chain management, and legislation can enable the transition to a circular economy. The cumulative thesis consists of three individual research projects: First, I examine how information sharing can advance the CE. In a systematic literature review of 84 peer-reviewed articles, I synthesize previous research on information sharing in the CE, propose requirements for interorganizational information sharing to promote circularity, and outline avenues for future research that can help meet these requirements. Second, I take a closer look at the understudied problem of implementing closed loop plastics recycling from a supply chain perspective. Using qualitative research, including 49 semi-structured interviews, I explore the operational barriers to closed-loop plastics recycling and identify actions that producers and recyclers need to take to build the capabilities and trust necessary to enable closed-loop recycling. Third, I examine whether legislation can incentivize the use of recycled plastic and closed-loop plastic recycling. Using system dynamics, I examine the impact of a plastic tax and a recycled content quota on the plastic recycling industry.
