Isotopic evaluation of the National Water Model reveals missing agricultural irrigation contributions to streamflow across the western United States

Abstract 18 O /16 O and 2 H /1 H expressed in δ δ 18 δ 2 δ 18 δ 2 δ 18 O diff δ 18 O obs - δ 18 O mod d diff δ 2 H diff - 8 ⋅ δ 18 O diff d diff δ 18 O diff d diff in a linear mixed-effects model, with up to 15.2 % of variance explained by fixed effects. This finding is supported by seasonal patterns, groundwater levels, and isotope ratios, and it suggests the importance of including irrigation return flows to rivers, especially in lower-elevation, higher-stream-order, arid rivers of the western US.
