La peur du déclassement: pauvreté et exclusion sociale en France
After a long lasting decrease, the percentage of people in relative poverty in France remains static and therefore becomes a major subject in French social policy. Government aims to reduce poverty by one third until 2012, compared to 2007. The imprecise definition and the insufficiency of measuring poverty have been a handicap for years to real-time prognoses and deferred taking measures to fight poverty. A new monitoring instrument based on surveys enables the measuring of long term poverty. It includes a variety of elements which allow a view on different facets of social exclusion. Notwithstanding the actual measurement reading, the French perceive a distinctly increased risk of poverty. This phenomenon can be attributed to the high degree of emotionalizing in the public discourse as well as to a change of poverty, which becomes manifest in the rejuvenation, feminization, urbanization and increasing poverty of employees.
