Development of frequency adjustable magnetic field probes for magnetic resonance systems
Abstract: This work investigates a new design for hydrogen-based field probes, that allows for adjusting the local Larmor frequency during a running MRI measurement. The design relies on an additional B0 field modification coil that can alter the local Larmor frequency of the NMR active liquid on demand. Numerous new opportunities concerning the mode of operation of the probes arise, as the local Larmor frequency of each of the field probes can now be changed individually. For example, it allows to selectively promote or avoid probe excitation and enables off-resonant field probe excitation. These features enable the use of hydrogen-based field probes in cases where the commonly used fluorine-based field probes are impractical. For the novel sensor design developed in this work, a patent application has been filed and recently approved, as it is especially suited for incorporation into the product coils of MRI systems. Prospectively, this enables highly integrated solutions with the potential to pave the way for the adoption of the field monitoring technology in the clinical routine
