Ben sheḳiʿah li-zeriḥah

Memoirs of Magen, born Hans-Nathan Mogendorf in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1922. In 1937 he left Germany to join a Hehalutz hachshara in the Netherlands, and in 1938 his parents emigrated to the Netherlands as well. In 1942 he married Sophie (Bina) de Winter; they lived in various places with false IDs, aided by Dutch non-Jews, and worked for the Hehalutz underground, participating in rescue activities. In 1943 he was caught attempting to enter Belgium, and was sent as a non-Jew to work in Essen, where he managed to help some friends. He was caught again attempting to leave Germany, imprisoned, and freed in April 1944. He returned to the Netherlands and went into hiding until the liberation in April 1945. After the war he and his wife emigrated to Eretz Israel. His parents and brother perished in the Holocaust.
