Timothy Snyders „Bloodlands" : Kritische Anmerkungen zur Konstruktion einer Geschichtslandschaft

Eine „Reise ins Herz der Finsternis“ verheißt der Klappentext der deutschen Ausgabe von Timothy Snyders aufsehenerregendem Buch „Bloodlands“. Es geht darin um die Geschichte jener Gebiete Ost und Ostmitteleuropas, die nacheinander von den Massenverbrechen der Regime Stalins und Hitlers betroffen waren. Jürgen Zarusky, Historiker am Institut für Zeitgeschichte, hat sich mit dem Buch eingehend auseinandergesetzt und kommt zu einer kritischen Einschätzung: Die „Bloodlands“ sind keine historische Landschaft, sondern ein Konstrukt, in dem geschichtliche Zusammenhänge teils zerschnitten, teils künstlich hergestellt werden. Stalinismus und Nationalsozialismus erscheinen dabei ähnlicher als sie es tatsächlich waren.
Abstract: Timothy Snyder's book "Bloodlands. Europe Between Hitler and Stalin" has attracted international attention, most of it very positive. The author points out the fact that a considerable percentage of the mass crimes committed by the dictatorships of Stalin and Hitler took place in a region he refers to as the "Bloodlands". This approach emphasises that the epicentre of the political catastrophes in Europe during the 20th century is further to the east than generally understood. In reality, however, the "Bloodlands" do not constitute a historical region: They are a synthetic construct. This is less a description of a "central event" of European history, as Snyder postulates, but rather a montage of interpretations of totalitarian mass crimes in a region which is defined by not always convincing criteria. This framework restricts the understanding of phenomena which go beyond it, such as the Soviet famine of 1932/33 or the Holocaust, and it constitutes a perspective in which the motives and actions of Stalin and Hitler seem more similar than they actually were. By contrast a central event such as the German-Soviet war is underexposed in its political-military dimension.
