Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Optically Anisotropic Materials: Polarization and Intensity Behavior

The change of the polarization state of an arbitrarily polarized wave in an optically anisotropic medium is discussed, and the cases are considered where the refractive index and the extinction coefficient as well as the two eigenmodes are completely degenerated. The latter corresponds to the propagation along a singular optical axis. It is found that an arbitrarily polarized wave changes its polarization to that of the eigenmode with the lowest extinction coefficient. Only if the two extinction coefficients are equal, no final polarization state is reached and the polarization changes during the whole propagation. For propagation along a singular optical axis, Voigt waves must be considered whose amplitude has a spatially dependent term that counteracts the exponential decay of intensity.
