Aboveground biomass at the Hartheim Forest research site 2023

Abstract: Aboveground biomass (AGB) was estimated at the Hartheim Forest Research Site (ICOS Ecosystem Site “DE-Har”) in Fall 2023. Data were gathered in compliance with ICOS instructions. The total AGB of the forest was estimated as 131'957 kg dry mass per hectare. The upper canopy consisted of solely Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra (375 trees per hectare) with an average height of 19 m and an average diameter at breast height (DBH) of 22.8 cm. 31% of the Pinus sp. trees were standing dead trees at the time of the inventory. Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra, including the dead standing trees, accounted for 67'310 kg dry mass per hectare. There were 710 broadleaf trees per hectare of in the mid-canopy (DBH > 5 cm, 32% Tilia sp., 24% Carpinus betulus, 15% Fagus sylvatica, 7% Acer platanoides, 6% Crataegus laevigata, 4% Prunus sp., 11% other broadleaf) with an average height of 10 m, and an average DBH of 12.3 cm. The broadleaf trees in the mid-canopy (>5 cm DBH) accounted for 37'780 kg dry mass per hectare. Shrubs and saplings in the understorey (< 5 cm DBH) have been estimated 22'308 kg DM per hectare, and herbs were 4'554 kg DM per hectare
