Unterrichtseinheit Young Adult Literature - Klassenstufe 8

Abstract: This teaching unit is based on the novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie and was created for an 8th grade of a Gesamtschule.

The unit, which covered 16 lessons in sum, focused on two major learning goals: Firstly, as the class had never worked with a novel in English before, the class activities aimed to convey the content of the novel and to practice competencies when working with novels. Secondly, the teaching unit focused on relating the novel to the concept of heroism, challenging the students to develop their own understandings of heroes and to discuss heroic elements depicted in the text.

Successive chapters with similar topics were grouped in the individual lessons and discussed with regard to the central motifs of the novel – friendship, love, sports, loss etc. The concept of a hero was introduced in the first session and taken up again in different class activities during the unit, challenging the students to form their own opinion which they could express in a final discussion in the last session of the project.

The materials include a vocabulary list, a vocabulary test, minor grammatical units, guided reading questions and various worksheets that were used to understand and discuss the content of the novel. Additionally, a detailed lesson plan was created for each lesson which covers all classroom activities, alternative exercises along with the general learning goals of the individual lessons
