In Maja verrucosa (Majidae) the sexes are easy to distinguish. The females have a wide, rounded abdomen with flattened, bristled pleopeds; that of the males is small and pointed. Also, the claws of the males are stronger and longer than the remaining legs. The males appear to recognize sexually receptive females olfactorily. They encage such females between their walking legs and defend them against rivales. They hold the leg contact while following the running females (tandem running). Copulation follows the typical posture of the Brachyuran; the male lets himself down between the walking legs of the female with his ventral side facing hers, while she opens her abdomen.
