We are the DDB: Das Stadtarchiv Detmold

The city archive of the old Lippe residence Detmold is held in high esteem by the public. This is due to the fact that Detmold played a special role among the Lippe municipalities until 1947 due to its former function as the capital of the state of Lippe. While the documents of the State authorities of the former Principality are stored in the Landesarchiv NRW (NRW National Archive), OWL department, the archives for social life in the capital of the Principality, and later the Free State of Lippe are kept in the Detmold City Archives.

Many gifts, such as family bequests, photographs, or club traditions, prove how much citizens perceive their city archives as a “memory of the city”. Numerous researchers use the holdings of the archive and urban historical projects explore aspects of local history

Detmold city views

With funds from the programme "Targeted Digitisation Funding for Cultural Institutions from the German Digital Library Network", it has now been possible to digitise the old photo collection of the City Archive and recordings of the municipal offices. Funding was provided from the NEUSTART KULTUR rescue and future programme of the Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, BKM).

Many photos have been submitted to the archive without a precise description of their context, many of which have since been developed. However, not all of the distortion data now searchable can withstand a critical review. Through publication, there is the chance to correct erroneous attributions and add supplements. City archivist Dr. Bärbel Sunderbrink and her team expect a lively exchange about the rich holdings of the Detmold Stadtarchiv from the presentation.
