One Year Deutsches Zeitungsportal: Over One Million Editions Available

By Lisa Landes (Project Manager Zeitungsportal)

On 28 October 2022, the Deutsches Zeitungsportal celebrated its first birthday. On 1 December, the threshold of one million available newspaper editions was exceeded.

But we are not only happy about the increase in newspaper editions. With the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek - Niedersächsische Landesbibliothek (Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library - Lower Saxony State Library), the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (University and State Library of the Rhenisch Friedrich Wilhelms University of Bonn) and the MARCHIVUM Mannheim, we were able to welcome three new data partners. They have enriched the Deutsches Zeitungsportal with editions by the Hannoversche Kurier, the Kölnische Zeitung and the Neue Mannheimer Zeitung, among others. While the Hannoversche Kurier is one of the outstanding newspapers in Lower Saxony, the "Kölnische Zeitung" can be described as a leading medium in the all-German press landscape of the 19th and 20th Century, due to its coverage and its influence. The "Neue Mannheimer Zeitung" was – under a changing name – one of the most widely circulated newspapers in Mannheim, the leading newspaper city in Baden, which also gives it special significance.

We would like to thank our data partners for these new newspapers as well as the deliveries of the existing data partners last year!

Users who are interested in new titles on the Deutsches Zeitungsportal are now able to obtain information from a list

The Deutsches Zeitungsportal is a sub-portal of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and, like it, brings together digital collections – in this case historical newspapers – from different institutions on a single portal.

The newspaper portal can be used free of charge without registration. Cultural and knowledge institutions that wish to participate with their newspaper holdings are very welcome.

The Deutsches Zeitungsportal is set up by four project partners: the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (project management), the Sächsischen Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB), the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz and the FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institut für Informationsinfrastruktur. The establishment of the Deutschen Zeitungsportals is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG and the four project partners.
