What role does metadata play in an interconnected world? How will exhibitions be designed in the future? Where is the development of the legal conditions heading? What are the strategies for access to cultural heritage in the future?

These questions form the focus of the international conference series "Shaping Access! More Responsibility for Cultural Heritage" ("Zugang gestalten! Mehr Verantwortung für das kulturelle Erbe"), which is taking place for the fifth time in the rooms of the Altona Museum on 5 and 6 November and is made possible by this year's host, the Hamburg Foundation of History Museums.

While in the last few years the focus was on questions related to the "Whether", "How" and "Why" of digitalisation of archives, libraries and museums and stock was then taken last year, this year the focus of the conference lies on the strategies for the future. In presentations, workshops, podium discussions and audience discussions held by renowned partners, questions will also be analysed related to the changed conditions of artistic work, the developments of production and distribution structures and participation concepts.
The contributions of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) at the conference are representative of the central fields of operation of the DDB. Strategies for the future, metadata, copyright, cultural hackathons and division-specific development are the themes of the presentations and workshops with which the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek is represented.

The presentation "Data Quality: A Success Factor for Access to German Cultural Heritage" ("Datenqualität: Ein Erfolgsfaktor für den Zugang zum deutschen Kulturerbe"), by Francesca Schulze, offers a look behind the scenes of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek: what do standardisation and data quality mean for the DDB – an important requirement for the future of access to cultural heritage.

The workshop "Coding da Vinci Cultural Hackathon" ("Kultur-Hackathon Coding da Vinci"), conducted by Stephan Bartholmei, embarks on new paths. Here, a Hanseatic version of the cultural hackathon is to be initiated. Coding da Vinci brings cultural institutions and hackers of Hamburg together for a test run that could turn into the first regional edition of the cultural hackathon in spring 2016.

In a cooperation between the German Digital Library and Wikimedia, Ellen Euler and Barbara Fischer impart fundamental knowledge for dealing with Creative Commons licences in the workshop "©© change your mind – Labelling of Free Content in the Digital Cultural Heritage" ("©© change your mind – Kennzeichnung freier Inhalte im digitalen Kulturerbe"). They also invite participants to license objects themselves in a role play using examples.

Further, Ellen Euler will host the “Discussion on the Future of Copyright Law” (“Gespräch über die Zukunft des Urheberrechts”) with representatives from the media industry, art and the sphere of copyright law: in view of technological developments, how can publications be shared, shown and used on the internet and how can it be ensured that neither the interests of owners and rights holders nor those of users get a raw deal?

Nadine Seidu presents the archive portal D in her talk on “New Opportunities for Access to Archival Information with the German Digital Library” (“Neue Zugangsmöglichkeiten zu archivischen Informationen mit der Deutschen Digitalen Bibliothek”) and finally Frank Frischmuth describes the current state of development of the German Digital Library and explains the next development steps.
