Seascapes
A restless sea, steep cliffs, lonely ships – sea pieces are paintings that capture maritime scenes. In the history of maritime painting, the sea was initially not a theme of its own, but served as a backdrop for ships of all kinds and the location of historical and mythological stories. It was not until the 19th century that the sea and its idiosyncrasies and moods were taken into consideration – from the stormy sea to the romantic sunset.
