Dr. Julia Spohr is to take over the leadership of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library) starting from 02 January 2020. She is succeeding Frank Frischmuth, former managing director of finance, law and communication, who will leave the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek at the end of 2019 after more than six successful years.

Dr. Julia Spohr studied history, political science and sociology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and did her doctorate at the Free University of Berlin on the history of the former central detention centre of the GDR State Security Service in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. After working for the Stiftung Gedenkstätte Berlin Hohenschönhausen (Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Foundation) and for the Federal Commissioner for the ‘Stasi documents’ in Berlin and occupational activities for the Federal Foundation to appraise the SED dictatorship, since 2016 the historian was working as Scientific Advisor to the Management and Head of Press and Public Relations at the Stiftung Sächsische Gedenkstätten (Saxon Memorials Foundation) and was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 2018. 

In her function as manager of the competence network as well as the areas of finance, law and communication of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, she will again take responsibility for a large network project.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hermann Parzinger, Spokesman of the Board of Directors of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and President of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) is contributing: “We thank Frank Frischmuth al lot for his work for the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and wish him all the best for the future. He has enabled the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek to take a big step forward and has set a number of important signals. At the same time, we are pleased to have found in Dr. Julia Spohr a personality who, in our opinion, will continue the work that has started and who will further develop the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek."
